PRIVACY POLICY
Last updated June 2026
Plain privacy for a local-first AI app.
The short version: Lokei does not collect conversations, files, prompts, attachments, analytics, advertising identifiers, or tracking data. Your chat history, settings, presets, project context, and memory are stored locally on your device. When you send a message, it goes only to the AI backend you have selected — Apple Intelligence on-device, a local model server you run, or a remote provider you configure. Lokei does not operate a relay server and does not receive a copy of your data.
1. Overview
Lokei is a private AI assistant for Mac (with an iOS companion in development) that lives in the menu bar. It supports private, on-device, or local-first AI workflows through Apple Intelligence on supported devices, local model servers such as Ollama or LM Studio, and optional user-configured compatible providers. Lokei itself does not operate chat servers, does not require a Lokei account, does not sell data, does not run ads, and does not use tracking.
2. What Lokei Collects
Lokei does not collect, transmit, store, or process any personal data on Lokei-operated servers. Specifically, Lokei does not collect:
- Your conversations, messages, or prompts
- Files, documents, images, or attachments you share with Lokei
- Your name, email, or any account information
- Usage statistics, analytics, or telemetry
- Device identifiers or advertising IDs
- Crash reports sent to Lokei
- Location data
3. Local Data Stored on Your Device
Lokei stores certain data locally on your device to provide its features. This data stays on your device unless you explicitly send a message to an AI backend:
- Chat history — conversations are saved locally with smart titles for easy browsing
- Settings and preferences — your backend choice, theme, and app configuration
- Presets / Specialist Modes — built-in and custom system prompts
- Project Context / Memory — information you save about your projects for tailored responses
If you enable iCloud sync, this local data syncs through your personal Apple iCloud account — not through Lokei servers. You can manage or delete synced data through your iCloud settings on your device.
4. When Data Leaves Your Device
Data only leaves your device when you send a message, and only to the AI backend you have selected:
- Apple Intelligence — requests are processed on-device or through Apple's Private Cloud Compute infrastructure. Apple's system-level privacy behavior applies; see Apple's privacy policy for details.
- Ollama, LM Studio, or local server — prompts and any attachments are sent to the server address you configure, typically running on your own Mac or local network.
- Remote / OpenAI-compatible provider — if you choose to configure a remote provider, prompts and attachments are sent to that provider's servers and are governed by that provider's terms and privacy policy.
Lokei does not operate a relay server. Lokei does not receive, intercept, or store a copy of the data you send to any backend.
5. AI Backends and User-Configured Providers
Lokei lets you choose where your AI runs. Each backend has its own privacy characteristics:
- Apple Intelligence — managed by Apple on supported devices. Lokei does not control Apple's on-device or Private Cloud Compute processing.
- Local model servers — Ollama, LM Studio, and similar tools run on hardware you control. Lokei connects to the address you provide (typically localhost or a local network IP).
- Remote providers — optional. If you enter an API key and endpoint for a remote OpenAI-compatible provider, your prompts and attachments will be sent to that provider. The provider's terms govern how they handle your data. Lokei does not share your API keys with anyone.
6. Permissions
Lokei may request the following system permissions on Mac or iPhone, only when a feature requires them:
- Local Network — to discover and connect to your Mac or a local AI server on your network
- Files — to import documents and files you choose to share with the chat
- Photos — to attach images you select from your photo library
- Camera — to capture images for use in the chat, if you choose
- Microphone — for voice input and dictation features
- Speech Recognition — to process voice input into text on-device
- Notifications — to alert you when background tasks complete
Lokei does not use any of these permissions for tracking, analytics, advertising, or background data collection. Permissions are requested only when you use the related feature.
7. Purchases and App Store Distribution
Lokei is distributed through the Apple App Store. Apple handles all download, purchase, and payment processing. Lokei does not receive your payment information, Apple ID, or billing details. Apple's privacy policy governs Apple's handling of your App Store account and purchase data.
8. Third-Party Services and SDKs
Lokei does not include third-party analytics SDKs, advertising frameworks, tracking pixels, or data-collection services of any kind.
Crash reports: Lokei does not include third-party crash analytics. Apple may provide developers with crash and diagnostic information based on your Apple diagnostics sharing settings (Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements). This is managed by Apple, not by Lokei.
9. Data Retention and Deletion
Because Lokei does not collect data on Lokei servers, there is no server-side data to retain or delete.
For local data stored on your device:
- You can delete individual conversations, project context, and presets from within the app at any time
- Uninstalling Lokei removes all local app data from your device
- If you have enabled iCloud sync, you can remove synced Lokei data through your device's iCloud storage settings (Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Manage Storage)
10. Children's Privacy
Lokei does not collect personal information from anyone, including children under the age of 13. Since Lokei collects no data, there is no children's data to protect. The app is not directed at children and does not knowingly provide services to children under 13.
11. Changes to This Policy
If this privacy policy is updated, the revised version will be posted at this URL with an updated date. Meaningful changes will be noted clearly. Given that Lokei's core principle is local-first privacy with no data collection, we do not anticipate significant changes to this policy.
